Early SB paint removal

I started removing some of the many layers of paint on my 16" SB today. Under all of the paint was a paint that seemed like it was soft and is very tough in getting if off with a wire wheel.

My lathe is a 1917 SB. Anyone else stripped paint off of one of these old ones?

Thanks,
Rick

Rick:

I have a 1913 SB 13", 1920 16" and 1923 11".

All three of these machines were painted black at the factory as were nearly all machine tools of this vintage.

What you are finding as the "first " coat is the heavy filler that was used to smooth out the " as
cast" surface.

I stripped the 11 down to bare metal with paint stripper, scraper, wirebrush plus a lot of elbow grease.

The 13" was painted by my Father some 50 years ago
over the original paint and has held up well.

The 16" is in its factory black and will remain that way as the paint is in surpisingly good shape considering the age of the machine. A very nice original !!

Thanks for the information. From reading this forum I suspected that was what it was. When you striped your lathe did you then put a new skim coat of filler on or did you just paint it?

Thanks,
Rick
