I bought this Furnas J2 switch and need some help wiring it to my Lesson 1.5hp 230v single phase motor. Any diagram or something telling me what wire goes where is very appreciated. Thanks

Is there a diagram inside the switch cover? Can you get a better picture of the motor plate? I cannot read the wiring diagram.

If the switch connection diagram is like the picture I posted above, I don't see a way to use this switch to cut both legs of the 220 circuit. I would work fine for 110 however. The other style of Furnas drum switch would be better for 220: furnas-1.gif

That said, if you are willing to leave one side of the circuit hot even in the off position, there is a way to switch the start windings and other leg using this switch.

Once you get a switch diagram we can be sure, of course.

I can get a Furnas R22 switch. Would that one be better?

Here's a diagram for 220 based on my assumption about your switch's contacts: furnas2-leeson.jpg Note that the white wire is not switched.

I think the R22 uses the other style of contacts, looks like a couple of capital L's that flip back and forth between reverse and forward. If so, that will work better for you.

That said, I have been surprised a few times when a switch guts did not meet my expectation based on a model number. It is best to get a picture of the diagram before purchasing, or wait until you have the switch in-hand. My favorite type of switch is a triple pole double throw, but they can be hard to identify. They will have 9 terminals under the cover, and some have pre-installed jumper wires to make them act like another switch type.

Some of those diagrams are for 110V only- if you see T5 and T8 both connected to L1 or L2 at the same time, you should not use those on 220.

The others are similar to mine in that T4 is always connected to one of the lines. As I said before, that will work, but it is not as safe as I would like- you will need another disconnect for servicing (a plug would be sufficient).

The others also have needless amounts of wire going to the switch. There is no need to bring the star point (T2/T3 junction) and both T5 and T8 out to the switch. Yes, the motor nameplate says you have to switch T5 and T8 to reverse direction, and for 110 that is true. But for 220, one of T5/T8 is connected to the star point, and the other can be flipped between L1 and L2. My diagram does this, and saves you two pieces of wire from the motor to the switch.

Also note that none of these other drawings include a ground. Please be sure to ground the switch body and the motor casing.

I have plenty of disconnect to make it safe. Power comes in through a fused lockable disconnect, out to the on/off switch, then to the motor.
