I finally bought my first South Bend Lathe. Its a later model 13. It is extremely dirty. I have about everything off for cleaning except the spindle. I want to take it off. Is there anything I need to know before I do? Looks like just bearing caps.

Be prepared for more dumb questions.

Thanks in advance,

Send us a picture of your bearing caps. There are 2 main styles. Older ones are segmented cast iron bearings. These will be straight forward. Newer lathes had bronze bearings with bearing expanders. . It is imperative that the expanders are released from the bearing caps prior to removal of the caps.

Yeah, so you have bronze bearings. Underneath the two pipe plugs on each cap, should be slot head screws. Those screw into the bearing expanders. Remove the screws completely before attempting to lift the bearing caps. If you fail to, you will surely destroy the bronze bearings. If these steps are observed and carried out, it is very simple and painless to get it apart.

Hope that's clear enough. Ask tons of questions!
