    Default Free Stuff from Starrett

Everyone has heard of Starrett precision tools. But did you know you can order free stuff from them? You can order a decimal wall chart (which also includes tap/drill sizes, etc), pads of paper, pocket sized decimal cards, pocket sized millimeter/inch cards. I ordered all of that and a tool poster (put it in a poster frame and hung it in the shop...quite attractive). The "Tools and Rules" booklet is excellent! And not only is this all totally free, it is even shipped for free via UPS and/or FedEx. The only thing you have to do is register on their site. I've never received anything in the mail or on the computer after registering. Go to Quality Precision Innovation... since 1880 - The L.S. Starrett Company. At the top it says "shopper log in". On that page you can register. Go to literature and go from there. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS!!!!

A couple other things that Starrett offers: You can get a tour through their plant in Athol, Massachusetts if there's enough interest. It's the same plant they have occupied since something like 1880. I went several years ago and it was totally fascinating....took about three hours. Starrett also has an outlet store on site that has some VERY good deals. It's only open a couple days a month. If interested, I'd contact them and find out when it's open. Just for example, I bought a couple cans of spray layout fluid for $1 a can. Got a free tie tac, and a Starrett hat for $1. Of course I got other items (dial indicator, saw blades, etc) but I don't remember the costs....

"....but I don't remember the costs...." just like me, wandered out with a full bag and no memory of what it cost

On a more serious note, I really enjoy dealing with the folks at Starrett, for example had a delightful email discussion with a chap called Bruce Fowler from their tech support several years ago about adjusting something or other...he not only provided all the information I could ever have needed on the subject but also offered his telephone number in case I had any issues. Naturally I send all my stuff back to them for recalibration and am always delighted to see my standards come back recal'ed ever so slightly to 0.000000n

They seem to have changed things slightly, hit "Literature" and then create a log-in that is separate from the Shopper log in. (No point creating two accounts unless you want to.)

Thanks for the great tip. I went there and ordered some of these. Had no idea these were available.

I went there in 2001 and asked when the tours were. This peach of a lady said, we can give you a tour in just a few minutes. Wow. This younger fella comes in to the century old office (really cool), introduced himself and away we went. His father, grandfather and G grandfather had all worked there. This guy was smart as a whip! Knew about every dept. He said he had a tour a week ago from a vocational school and hated doing it. Why? Cause the kids never asked a question and had zero interest in being there. Sad. I thought I was becoming annoying with all my Q's, but he loved it. Neat how they trued up those super big squares in the dark room. Went into a tunnel under the road to a little museum which was really nice. By the way, Athol, Mass. is in the middle of nowhere. Sure is worth the time.

How did you like that huge surface grinder? As I recall, only two were made that one and one that is now at the bottom of the ocean after the ship that was carrying it was sunk by a German U-Boat. And then there was the somewhat restored old machine shop?!!!!!

The guy that gave us the tour told us something similar about giving the tour to a high school class...they had no interest whatsoever in the tour, but enjoyed the tour with us as the three of us were all fascinated.
