"Heavy Ten" explained

Hi There,

One of the threads here, someone asked: "What is the difference between a 10L and a 'Heavy Ten'."

To put it simply, the "Heavy Ten" lathes first came out with a 1-7/8" x 8 tpi spindle. These are the 10R lathes. Soon after its introduction, a larger spindle was offered (2-1/4 x 8 tpi). This proved to be the more popular spindle and the lathe was designated the 10L. Other than the spindle size, they are the same machine.

Since then, there have been other spindle offerings; like L00 and D Camlock (D1-4 I think). These are not encountered very often.

I hope this information helps.
