Someone wants to purchase a chuck from me that I inherited, but I don't know if it will fit on his 9" inch South bend. How do I tell? The chuck is a three jaw chuck with 1 1/2x8 threads.
If it is indeed 1 1/2 x 8 TPI it will fit. Sometimes you have to open up the end of the thread to fit a register on the spindle. Easy peasy. Most chucks I install I remove the backplate and true it up on my spindle. Then assemble the rest of the chuck. Gets me a more accurate chuck IMHO. I did have chucks that the thread needed to have a tap run through them to make them thread on the spindle easier.
I made up a half assed gauge for checking the threads in backplates I was making for my 10K. I would be happy to loan it to Plazaguy if he pays postage both ways.
