maximum depth of cut on 9"

It depends on a number of factors
but I would hazard a guess at somewhere
between 0.1 and 0.2 inch of diameter
(0.050 to 0.100 infeed on the slide).

This of course depends on the condition
of the leather belt, the tool being used,
the motor hp to a small degree.

Mark, I know you asked about a 9" and as Jim said there is a lot of variables. For example flat belt VS VEE belt. I have a 10K VEE belt which for comparison lets say its a 9" with the same parts. I can easily take .400 .200x2 on HRS with a sharp HSS bit. But only .320 .160x2 on CRS with the same bit. I have no belt slippage or motor bog with a 1/2 hp motor. I just finished turning a 40# chunk of cast iron almost 10" in dia taking .085 of each pass in low backgear. Pics in my Yahoo group...Bob http://groups.yahoo.com/group/southbend10k/

aametalmaster, I actually have a 10K, and asked about 9" just because there are so many more out there and figured they are about the same.

I am quite surprised to hear about .4" cuts in HRS (you mean plain old hot rolled steel I assume?) I have had very poor luck with this. I would love to hear the specifics about setup (workpiece size, spindle speed, feed rate, tool type and settings, etc.) A picture on you 10K group would be cool!
