My 1928 came with original motor, but in un-serviceable condition. I swapped it out with a generic 3/4 hp motor. Working out the bugs and vibrations, i keep coming back to the motor.
There is a noticeable twist at start, as well as some suspect bearing noise.
What motor would be suggested?
I do plan on cleaning up and rewiring original, for historic value, but would like a good, solid motor for every day, utilitarian use. Looking for suggestions.
I had been eyeing a dayton 6k589k - 1/2hp blower style motor with the external bearing and cage at front, thinking this would provide some much needed support to shaft.

I know you guys like eye candy. Random

What do you mean by "a twist at start" ?

Being the cheapwad that I am, I'd probably just replace the bearings in the existing motor if its got ball bearings.

Twists - meaning cheap motors frame is not rigid enough to handle start torque. It pretty pronounced.
Again, very cheap chinese motor, not worth the effort on bearings.

IMO just about perfect for that machine is this...

BALDOR M356 1/2HP 3PH 85RPM 25/46V 2.5/1.23A INDUSTRIAL MOTOR | eBay

compact enough to work with your drive unit and at 850rpm will give you a nice speed range without exceeding the top end your machine was designed for....ran between 45-90hz via a VFD and you are in there.:)

I would agree that is a very nice motor. The original was a 1150 rpm motor. Also looking at original 1/4hp motor, a 1/3hp may do fine as well. Don't plan on production work and needing to hog out material so....
Something to think about. Thanks for the feedback. More options are always a good thing.

Yes, that is what makes the Baldor close to a perfect match...at 90hz it will run ~1150-1200rpm...and the size of it is very close to the original also.

the slight bump in horsepower over the 1/4-1/3HP motors would be a nice thing too.:)

A little digging, found this.

Baldor VL135 1/2 HP, 114 RPM Single Phase Electric Motor 115 / 28-23 VAC NIB

And this-

Magnetek Century Electric 1/4hp 115v 114rpm 5amp 5/8" shaft electric motor, new | eBay

Realistically, bigger isnt better. Again, not looking at hogging and would like to take it easy and keep her going for another 89 yrs.
