Default Posting pics as thumb nails to a thread

I tried to add thumbnails to another post and was unsuccessful. I was using the direction on the sticky for posting from Photobucket. Are those directions contained in the sticky no longer valid or was I doing something wrong?-Jerald

    Hi Jerald,

The instructions contained in the first post of this thread should still apply.

Note that the references to Photobucket and [IMG] tags pertain mainly to the embedding of images within your post. Nothing has changed in this regard with the adoption of the new forum software, except that you are now limited to a total of four images (including smileys!)*

What has changed with the new forum software is that you are now permitted to upload your images to the forum's server, and have them appear as clickable thumbnails at the bottom of your post. (No need for an image-server, such as Photobucket.) See the asterisked addendum at the bottom of the first post in this thread for specific instructions on how to do this.

Jerald, let me know if you are still having problems after reading this post. I suggest you try a test post, with picture(s), in this thread, and I will be glad to troublshoot your code for you. The same applies to any other forum members having trouble getting their images to appear.

    Paula

*EDIT 12/12/08: Apparently Don has rescinded this limit, as I have been seeing posts with far more than 4 embedded images lately. So, feel free to post more images, if the fancy strikes. However, if you do, try to keep them to a modest size -- so that folks with slower connections can stay with us.

Hi Paula, I tried uploading one of my pictures, (one of the ones you've seen on here), and it indicated my file was too large; 1.14 kb (or whatever), compared to an allowable 97 kb. Any way to bump this up a bit?

    Kincar,

I'm afraid I have no control over the size limit of uploaded images. I suspect that the limit is set rather conservatively to minimize the impact of forum members' abusing the privilege.

However, there is no real limit on the size of off-site hosted images, though we recommend a voluntary limit of 640kb pixel width, or 800 pixels, if you really need it. This is to make life easier for those with slower connections.

    Default deleted photos from Photobucket

Paula, Once photos have been uploaded to the Practical Machinist can they be deleted from Photobucket and still show up on the postings? I've done some testing but I'm still not sure and I don't want to strip the photos from my postings. Thank you, Tex

    Test photo:

Tex, any photos on Practical Machinist that are linked to Photobucket (such as the one in your post) will disappear if you delete them from Photobucket. These photos are not really "uploaded" to PM, you are just placing a link in your post to the Photobucket website.

If you want to upload your photos to the actual PM server, so that you can remove them from Photobucket, follow the procedure outlined at the bottom of the first post in this thread. This will place a "thumbnail" of the photo in your post, which can be clicked to open the full size photo.

    Default Photobucket Photos

Thanks Paula, - I got a notice fro Photobucket that I'm reaching my 25 gig limit and I need to buy a up grade. I thought if I could just remove the photos I'd all ready posted here then I would need to buy an upgrade. I'll go ahead and get the upgrade, I don't want to remove the photos I've put here. Thanks for your help and all the great work you do for all of us here. I do appreciate it. Tex

    Default file size

Paula, I have tried to upload a couple of pictures using the "Manage Attatchments" feature and found that the pictures far exceed the max allowable. I used the option to upload from files on the computer, but the pics were rejected due to size. Is there a way to resize them? I admit to being computer-retarded, bu I looked all over the window where the pictues are displayed from the file on the computer and dont see how to do it. Or do I have to do it the old way and load them to photobucket?

I use this simple, free, utility to manage my pics:

Thanks, Pete, I just did it via photbucket and discovered that they were "automatically" resized to the recommended size here, so I guess I'll just keep doing it that way.

I like to keep my photos on my own 'puter so I just use the IRFanview and post the re-sized pics to this PM server. I hate it when a pic on another server goes away 'cause then it also goes away in the thread I want to read!

Oh. I'll check it out. Didn't realize there was a fundamental difference.

Yeah, use the 'paperclip' to upload pics to this server after you've resized them.
