Hi: I know someone here can answer this for me. I have a 9" Model A, when the crossfeed screw is removed from the saddle there is a recess in the saddle, what purpose does this serve ? Just curious. Thanks, Joe

Are you talking about the big slot under the compound? I guess you don't need that much cast iron there. It also serves as a good point to get chips under there...Bob

Thank you Bob. I think I'll rephrase the question. From the operator position, you unscrew the crossfeed bushing. On the face of the saddle you will see the circular recess that the bushing came from. It is very shallow, and I'm wondering about it's purpose. Other than the crossfeed bushing sitting in it, what else could it be doing ? Thanks you, Joe

Hi Joe,

If I understand you correctly, the shallow recess is just where the casting was "spot faced" to provide a truly flat and perpendicular surface for the shoulder on the cross freed bushing to butt against; instead of the rough cast iron surface.

Good Luck!
