Saddle slop

I cannot find any way to stop the saddle from caming up about .050 when cross carriage engages the stock. The saddle cams up from the front slide. I have a South Bend 9" lathe.

Any ideas?

That effect you describe would be very odd.

In normal operation, using normal tool geometery
and conventional forward spindle rotation, the
force from the cutting tool resolves into two
components - one that tries to push the
cross slide back towards the operator, and
another that tries to push the front of the
carriage down into the bed.

Do not know your experience level so please do not take offense at this comment:

The only way I can see this happening is to have the spindle running in reverse ( clockwise when facing the chuck ).

With the spindle running forward ( counter clockwise), the reaction of the saddle is as Jim Rozen states - forward and down against the front way.

Thanks to both of you for your reply. My experience level is not high as you might imagine but I understand what you are trying to say. I guess this explains why I cannot see any "adjustment" type of part on the front, when I look at the exploded parts view.
