I was adapting a flea market lathe chuck backplate to a 4 jaw I've had for 10 years but never used.

Due to some space constraints of the backplate and some screw heads on the chuck, I had to skim .010 off the end of my lathe spindle. The material turned beatifully. I figured it would be difficult material to work with, hardened and such. Machined like 12L14.

What steel are SB lathe spindles made of?

Hi There,

I'm not sure but I always suspected that it is 1137 or 1144. These are "free machining screw stock."

If anyone know for sure, please chime in.

This is what South Bend says:

"The headstock spindle is made of alloy steel with carburized, hardened, and ground bearing surfaces with a hardness of 51 to 56 on Rockwell C scale."

For what it's worth...I have a print for a Clausing lathe spindle which was drawn in 1944 . It specs out C-1137.
