I would like to scribe accurate 90* witness lines ( from the witness line in the front of the compound) on my 10L compound. Is there an accurate method that will enable an old, not so smart, man in doing this task?

Thanks,

Pete

an easy way would be to turn a relatively large diameter piece of scrap as long as the travel of the compound, then indicate the turned piece with the compound until there is no movement on the indicator.
then instead of scribing, use a magnifying glass and center punch the marks on top of the cross slide to match the marks on the compound scale.

instead of lines, dots! :)

Just thinking out loud here... do you want to make a line that's perpendicular to the axis of the lathe? How about putting a boring bar with a long tool bit in the chuck with the back gear locked, then cross feeding beneath it to scribe the line(s)?
