This thread brings up a question. What information did South Bend provide when they shipped a lathe? In other words, operators manual, parts manual, accesories available, etc.?

I'm the third owner of a 9", 4' bed that I thought was shipped in 1928 or 29. This may be wrong based on what I've seen on the serial number list.
Cat # 580-AB

I think I'm caught up with numbers, If I've missed anyone just yell at me...ya know I'm not as young as I once was, sometimes I run like windows 98...I've started to add user lathes,
see the photos section. E-mail me for details
on submissions. Download Jalbum (free) and reduce the photos to 100k or below for the dialup users.
before making the album.
Pmerritt, I put it in as a 31, that's where it looks correct, but you may be right, the numbers are strange from 29 to 34. I'll have to have more numbers to make it a 29. Look for the casting date for me. Take a look at the second album, it shows a picture of a 27 cast date inside the bed wall.
Metalman, they all came with HTRAL (how to run a lathe) and other information (oiling) yes probably Tools and accessories. I have editions of HTRAL, but not scanned yet.
Thanks everyone, your doing a great job.

Here's the info on my 10L. I'm the 2nd owner. I bought it back in December of 2003, from the company that originally ordered it thru the local dealer, A.C. Colby. My dad and I had worked for the company I bought it from, so we knew the machine's history very well. He actually placed the order for the machine in 1969, as he was Plant Superintendent at the time.
This info is straight from a copy of the Serial Number Card I obtained thru LeBlond.
Catalog No. CL8187RB
Serial No. 17872 RKX
Shipped Sept. 17,1969
It was special ordered as a Tool Room model, less the taper attachment. It had the original Reliance motor and controls on it.

I have a 16" with 10' bed.
Catalog number: 117G
Serial number: 107302 (1941 from Steve's website) with L.O.R. and J.A.N. stamped below the number.
There is a 2" X 3" metal tag riveted to the pedestal just above the door to the motor. It has the following stamped in it: 107302, 143, and MAX. Apparently this plate was originally painted with labels and boxes to be filled in with data but all that remains is a blank plate with the above mentioned items stamped in it. Can anyone tell me what this plate (maybe a military ID tag?) was used for?
04-22-2007, 10:41 AM #39
aluminum, it's a 1947.
can anyone explain the LOR and JAN
does JAN mean Joint Army Navy?

I have a SB 9, Cat No 415-YC, SN 109149. I belive it was exported to the UK in the 1940s as part of the war effort, but that is as much as I know.
