Don, it is a 9 inch. The UMD 344 was a 12 speed under-drive on a metal column base.
this could be a right floor-leg model or a (I believe) 3-drawer rt leg. although this lathe you're
looking at is a 1952, here is an owners parts book that shipped with a 1945 model:
http://www.wswells.com/data/parts/pa...list_P-344.pdf

The 3-1/2 foot 344-ZD was a popular model and IMHO probably the best 9 inch Workshop made.
Fully tooled as a Tool room model it would be hard to beat for a small project lathe.

Just picked up a 13" today.

I do not know the age, but should be in the 70-80's since the tag says
South bend an employee owned company.

My info:

Cat # CL0145C
Serial # 16825-T

It needs a bunch of cleaning, new paint and a few parts.
Don't think it was used a ton because it came out of a school.

Took a machinist friend with me and he said it should clean up great.

Default My Heavy 10

Got it about 4 years ago from a dungeon-like shop in Hoboken, NJ. It came equipped with a bed turret attachment (with serial number matching the bed), lever-collet closer and a bunch of tooling. Absolutely filthy, but the grime probably keeps it from rusting.
3-1/2' bed it is the X-braced type, and although it is not badged as such, I'm told it has hardened ways - you can't see any evidence of scraping, nor of wear, so the ways were probably ground.

late 1939 or early 1940, need the serial number card copy to confirm.

Let me know if this has floor legs.
This is the Flathers QCG 9 inch first series, I believe. a guess is it's a 1926, the serial card
would help here as it could be a 1925 also.

Default Re serial numbers

Newbie here but been lurking around for a while. I,m not young (67) and have been interested in anything mechanical since I was young. Been dabbling with cars for a while (restored my 67 Camaro, finally after almost 25 years. On and off of course.) Still working, can't afford to retire yet, bought a bigger house 3yrs. ago.
Any way, my main post is about a South Bend lathe we have at work. It was donated by the military to us. ( I worked with the correctional system here in our state).

Swing: 13"
Bed: Maybe a 30" or 40" ?
Ser.Number: 000033R1
Comes with taper attachment, couple of chucks and some Jacobs rubber collets, steady and follower rest.
I think something is wrong with the spindle, it moves,
has a play of about 1/2" from left to right.
I'll really appreciate it if someone can give me a background about this lathe, operators or parts manual availability. This lathe has not been used since
we got it about 5 yrs ago.
Thank you very much.
If this post is not in the right section, I do apologize.

The serial number is a little odd for the description. But for the military, you never know! A picture will work wonders. Once we know for sure about what machine you have, your problem can be diagnoised.

Exclamation 1917 34B 13" X 5 foot South Bend

I do not believe I have done this yet though I have had good intentions. Do to health issues with my wife and I my shop is just about as much disarray as my real world. I live in SW Wisconsin and I traded a 14 foot Antique Lathe, this is more important than I knew at the time, to my buddy for this lathe. I thought it was the sweetest looking lathe I had ever seen when he showed it to me It had belonged to his Grandfather for maybe 50 or 60 years, I am just guessing. He lived here in SW Wisconsin also. I have had it for a couple years about. Someday it will shine with Satin Black but I am ashamed to say it is just as I traded for it. I have cleaned the ways and though not in this photo I have put a new 1 hrsp motor on it and rewired the conglomeration. Having to reach over the spinning work piece to shut it off was someones bad Idea. It had been taken great care of and my buddys Grandfather was a perfectioist and disgusting as it is, had every tool in his shop organized and where you could find it. It is a South Bend Lathe 13 Inch with a 60 inch total length bed with I believe it's called - OverHead Drive. The s/n is 12776. Thanks to a PM friend I have all the change wheels, the Large & the Small face plate, the steady rest with a set of new jaws, a nice 5" chuck with ID holding jaws, a 6" chuck that has issue and wrenches, tool holders, cut off holder etc etc, foreward and reversing switch etc. It is in very good shape for a used lathe, period - let alone a 92 year old lathe, it's a fine example of AMERICAN WORKMANSHIP.. It was the 3rd machine I aquired after starting to collect Vintage Metal Working equipment. Now I am up to 10 machines of all sorts. I have had a great time on this site and met some very giving and unselfish folks from everywhere, all of which I would like to call friend. " REMEMBER TO SAVE OUR MACHINES FROM THE SCRAP YARDS!!!! "
