    Southbend 9A
    #32466NKR8
Currently undergoing a color change from an ugly dark maroon and yellow to original Southbend greyish green(or is it greenish grey?). This project started when I could no longer change speeds in the gear box. I took the gearbox apart to clean it which lead to "I might as well paint the gear box while I have it off." That lead to "well, I might as well paint the bed behind the gearbox". Which lead to "Just dismantle & paint the entire lathe."
I've used this lathe almost every day since I got it about 2 years ago. It was given to me along with a M-head Bridgeport.

Default south bend serial nos wanted sn. 24470 NCR9

    Hi Practical Machinist.
Ref "SERIAL NOS. WANTED", I have what I think is a:
South Bend 9c (manual gear change)
    serial no. 24470 NCR9.
The overall length of the bed is 54 ins.
My guess is that it was made in the late 1920/early 1921.
I have attached a composite picture of the m/c including accessories.
could anyone confirm the vintage and model.

    Regards,
    Camillus

I picked up a Southbend Heavy 10 about a year ago. It's an older under mount drive, original leather flat belt, 48 inch bed, single tumbler, no taper attachment.
    Serial number 3242RKL9.

    Hi newbie here..

Only found this forum last week bought my lathe 5 years ago for 3K ZAR ($375 at that time) from a friend who bought it on auction. I only found out 3 years later that it was sort of collectable. Mine is in use it is fully functional with extra gear sets for thread cutting (I do not use it as all our stuff are metric)
    Lathe info
    Serial no:83210
    9in swing
the bed I'm not sure how to measure but think it to be 38in

I am really trying to figure out if a machine that is for sale about an hour from me is a heavy 10 or not I don't know where to turn to ask I have looked everywhere. There is no catalog number on the nameplate the serial number is 83006

I can get this machine for a song but I don't want it unless it's a heavy 10 it also comes with a taper attachment
The inner diameter of the spindle is 1.400 which seems to me should be a heavy 10

Add more of us have to decide if I'm going to buy this by tomorrow morning and I'm freaked out LOL any help?

Hard to tell exactly (photo details not very close) but it looks very much like a 1940-41 Heavy 10 tool room model (looks like taper attachment extension in there) with the segmented bearings.

So it is true that if its 1.400 1 and 3/8 approximate id spindles then it's a heavy 10? I also know there's a 1 inch version I believe too but if my memory serves me correctly I think the 13 inch had a 1 and 3/8 penalty if I'm not mistaken I may be mistaken on that

I keep going back and forth weather or not to buy this puppy its present condition I can get it for $1,100

    I have a Heavy 10 to add.
I don't know if it's all here, (It came in pieces pulled from a discarded equipment pile in a barnyard near by)
It's taken a week of molasses, white vinagar, or reverse electrolysis (depending on size or amount of rust present) to get it clean enough to read but I now know this much.
    Heavy 10
    Serial#- 135474. DWW JAN
    Catalog#- 8187 RN
    Bed- 4.5'
If I decide its even worth asking about I'll start a thread on it.

So far I'm into it for $5.50 worth washing soda, vinegar, and molasses...

Your lathe was the 8,990th 13" lathe manufactured after the serial # format changed in '47. Yours in 1962.

TKL: T=13" lathe.....K= double tumbler gearbox with under motor drive...L=large bore spindle (1.375")probably

    2.250" x 8tpi threaded spindle.

    Catalogue # 8145B : 8145= 13" "toolroom" lathe (precision leadscrew)and probably taper attach, B= 5 foot bed.

This should put you at ease. PB
