Shimming SB13 spindle bearings.

I finally got around to doing a bearing test on my 1966 SB13 and I've got about 6-5 thou of play on the front and 3-4 on the back. I read the section on the book Keeping Your Lathe In Trim posted elsewhere and it seems pretty easy (almost too easy).

Should I expect to be able to just peel back a couple of layers on the original laminated shim and be good? Are they all shimmed with these laminated shims? I've never seen anything like that so I'm mystified a bit.

Should I replace the spring-loaded felts at the same time? I don't have any reason to suspect that they are at fault. Is it a big deal to take out the spindle once you've removed the bearing caps?
