South Bend 9/10 Headstock Reassembly - How to Lock Bronze Bushing?

I am in the process of re-assembling the headstock on my 10k and have run into a small issue. When I begin to press in the spindle, the bronze bushings start to slip and it throws off the alignment for the bottom oilers. Now the back bushing I can re-align by using a small allen key to push it forwards but have no way to do the same thing for the right hand / chuck side bushing.

If I tighten the 4 screws on the gibs to lock in the bushing, now the tips of the screws interfere with the spindle. I could always take them to the belt sander to trim them a bit but I feel there is something else I might be able to do without any modifications.

Any tips? Thanks

The bearing expander screws should have lock washers on them. In no way should they ever touch the spindle. If they are likely to touch the spindle with the lock washers installed, it is advisable that you shorten the screws. They should never be allowed to touch the Spindle.

stay safe and have fun.

Joe.
