I removed the compound leadscrew on my 13" South Bend recently. To my surprise it is allthread, not ACME or another square-profile thread. Has anyone else noticed this? My lathe is a bit old, from pre WWI, so that could explain it, but I'm still curious. On top of this, my crossfeed also is allthread, not ACME. There's quite a bit of backlash in the crossfeed (I can move the compount rest about .750" in with hand power alone). Should I bother replacing these screws (and the corresponding nuts, of course), or is it a waste of time and money?
