Hello all,

Hope you are all well.

I have been looking for a South Bend for a while now to restore and use.

I have come across one but the owner doesn't know a lot about it.

can anyone identify it so i can do some research on it.

Thanks

Rich

FWIW, the lathe looks like an older model 9C or similar machine or at least it started out that way. Looks like it's been kind of cobbled together with some non-original components, to me at least. The cross slide & compound looked replaced, as does the tail stock.
If you're looking to "Restore" one, you might wait to find a more original machine.

It appears to be what we used to call a "Frankenlathe". I'd wait for something better to come along.

That is a very rare machine. It is the original model 9" underneath drive workshop lathe. Go here if you wish to see a few pictures.

the headstock in bed or both unique to this machine. Any related parts needed may be difficult if not impossible to find.

And as others have said it looks like it has some odd parts on it already.

Unless you can get it for a good price, or want to try to make a museum piece, I would stay away from it.

stay safe and have fun.

Joe.

Hello everyone thanks for the replies.

Unfortunately the sale was very time sensitive as it was a good price and a few people was interested. So i purchased it before seeing your comments.

However, I think i will keep the lathe, tidy it up a little. and use it.

Here is a few more pictures i have taken, can anyone see anything wrong or have any recommendations.

I would like to fit a quick change tool post, maybe change the belt (if possible) and get a center and drill chuck for the tail stock.

I would love to hear from you all as i am very new to this.

Thanks

Rich

Be sure the spindle is getting oil..hand pick out all the chips. Don't spray can or blow the machine..500 to 1000 and not so bad. Done is done and you can have a lot of fun making parts..gears look std..Good.
