I recently came across my dad, Art Nixon's, South Bend Lathe service award pins. The pins in the photo are for five, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 years of service. The 20-year pin has a single small diamond and the 25-year pin has two small diamonds.

I believe my dad's first year at "The Shop" -- then located on East Madison Street in South Bend -- was 1937.

My father's starting year with South Bend Lathe was actually 1934, which was also the year he graduated from Mishawaka High School with a trade course diploma. Here's his 25-year service certificate, awarded on Oct. 3, 1959.

Thanks, he undoubtedly had a hand in building a number of my lathes.
As a curiosity that the 20 and 25 year awards had diamonds would… the 30 and 35 year awards be gold?

I'm guessing that the 30- and 35-year service pins were changed as a result of the American Steel -- Amsted -- acquisition of South Bend Lathe. Note how the words "Lathe Works" were dropped on the latter pins.
