South Bend Steady Rest - keep or sell?

My south bend 9 came with a steady rest. I'm still new to this machine and machining in general, but so far have not seen a need for it. I don't think in the future I will face anything so long I can't just do it with the chuck. What are your opinions, should I keep the steady rest or sell to recover costs?

Keep it. Not just for long work. I've used mine about 6" from the chuck doing a run of thumb screws 6 at a time. Overhang the steady by about 4". Far more ridged than overhanging the chuck. Waste less stock too.

When you need it, absolutely nothing else will do. I have a steady and a follow for my 10L. Haven't needed them yet but they aren't going anywhere.

Keep it for sure. I've found over the years that selling your tools is a loser, even if they're rarely used. The minute you sell it, you'll need it.

If you decide to sell the steady rest, take a selfie of yourself holding it in your arms. Then, you will always remember who to blame. Regards, Clark
