spindle key damaged

I've got a 10k lathe, circa 1967, and the key inside the spindle recently got damaged (not sure how, but suspect that I may have inadvertently forcefully tightened down a collet whose keyway wasn't properly aligned). Any advice for how to remove and replace the key without damaging the threads would be very welcome. Specifically wondering if I tap out the old one from inside the spindle (the key itself appears to be gone) or from outside). Hopefully attached photos make the problem clearer... thanks for any advice!!

I'd say you could most likely tap it either way- but try from inside out first. Then fit a new piece of dowel stock, then gently cut the thread into it to match...

Those would be my guesses...
