Is it unusual to have a feed and threading plate that is not brass?

My 1942 South Bend 9" lathe has a threading plate that is not brass and has what seems to be purple highlighting.

The lathe is in excellent original condition with very little wear. The plate on the gear cover is brass.

I wondered if it might be due to a shortage of material after/during the war?

Yes. Brass was in restricted use as it was needed for the manufacture of ammunition(brass shells).
My 9A was ordered during the war, and delivered right after the war, did not have a brass threading plate.
