    Exclamation New Classified Section

This forum is not accepting new threads. We have opened a classified section that should work much better for both sellers and buyers.

Please post your ad here: http://classified.practicalmachinist.com/

    Thanks!

The new classifieds are crap. Does anyone need a 6-inch Austrian-made Maier D1-4 4-jaw chuck?

    I agree, in two ways:

    1) What I liked about the old listing format was that I could quickly browse, just to see what people were buying and selling. Now, I have to click on each category.

    2) Also, if I want to sell some of my stuff, I have to figure out which category is the best one for it. I liked the two broad "for sale" categories, of "machines" and "accessories."

On the other hand, previous changes Don has made to this forum all seem to have worked out well, even those that were met with some resistance. So maybe I am just feeling resistant to change.

I trust that there were some good reasons for the change in format, such as the ease of management and moderation of this section. Also, it makes sense to be able to see a quick thumbnail view of the item for sale, along with the price and location.

Anyway, I will give it a chance, and try to get used to the new format. Thank you, moderators, for maintaining this useful site.

p.s. What is a "Super Moderator?" And is that the highest possible ranking? :-)

Edit: I apologize for not playing more with the new site before posting. Thanks to Ox, for pointing out what should have been obvious to me: to click on the words that say: "For Sale"

i agree with Jon. I liked the broad categories.

would be nice to at least see machines moved into one category and have a few for accessories. One category I would like to see added is materials since there are a few people that set up flat rate box deals. Is it possible to make it where you can view all for sale listings?

The fonts could definitely be a bit bigger, too. It hurts my eyes to read the tiny description below the already-small headings. Gonna be a tough switch to make!

It's working fine for me. I posted a couple dozen Jancy slugger cutters and have gotten so many responses, I can't keep up. Oh, wait, I'm wrong. It's been absolutely none! Has anyone gotten any replies.......at all?

    Hi Ray,

I am having the same poor experience with the new format. The older one was so much more fun and interesting to use. I posed my own thoughts and experiences over here. PM Classified - 2 thoughts I really wish if anything the owner of this forum would reopen these original forsale discussion sections of this forum with the same old rules, and if anything use the new one as an additional forum, pehaps charge vendors to list items there as their own personal store if he would like.

I found in the past the discussion forum format was the best way out there to sell an oddball item most people didn't think that they ever needed. Now it is gone. I really miss the old format for sure.

The text color and size are hard to read.

Edit: By color, I mean the gray on gray is lacking contrast. Black text might make up for the small size to a degree. The larger of the two text sizes uses a rather thin font.

I can barely read the grayed out text. Why not use black? Do you think we're all 20 years old? :-)

I posted up a chuck that doesn't fit my lathe. I haven't gotten any replies or questions. Wanna trade your cutters for my chuck? Looks like this thread might be our best option for classifieds!

    ions82,
Sounds like a good idea. By the way, what did you do to post a pic on that site? I've got Photobucket, so that may not apply.

I just used the uploader that was provided. I've gotten a couple responses to the ad, but they both have very similar e-mail addresses. I am not sure if they are generated by the site or what. Has anyone else posted and gotten replies from (name)@windstream.net?

    Default Email alert

What I liked about the old system was the ability to subscribe to it and get Email alerts of new postings. It was nice to just see whats new each day and not have to look at every other add all over again.

ions82, I responded to the ad you listed on the new classifieds about the 6" D1-4 4 jaw. I responded through the new for sale site. I understand your aggravation with the new classifieds, you can't get any responses and I can't either.
Do you still have it for sale and what is the condition.

I certainly will miss buying items on this site. It used to be THE best place on the web to get great deals. Now it isn't worth taking the time to look at. For Sale or Wanted always seemed to be too good to be true & it's now apparent that it was. It's a loss for everyone who used to check this section two or three times a day.

I liked the old way better as well, but as someone who builds web sites for a living, I see this sort of thing all the time.

The new site should have used the same logins and post counts as this site. even better would be if it had been under the same authentication system so we don't have to log in twice. At the very least I wish he would get rid of those damn captchas. The spammers can read too, and it is just not worth the bother to post information and help people for the hell of it.

I am sure his web developer(s) would say that the forum software does not accommodate these things, or that it would be too expensive to make it work right. I have said these things too, and in my heart I always knew I was doing my client a disservice. A good developer would have warned him that he might lose audience if he makes the site just a little too inconvenient.

No doubt Don had the best intentions. Unfortunately he did not ask any of us what we wanted in a classified section! Of course that is his right, but if he gets it wrong (and I think he did) then no one will use them and they will just die. The web is littered with good intentions in the form of empty forums and unused classified sites. With any luck he will realize this before all the folks with things to sell go elsewhere permanently

    This really sucks!
Give us back the old way of listing, so we can buy and sell without the hassle of this 'new way' of listing classified items.
