Dave, you're correct. I've got a Sheldon / Sebastian geared head 13" x 36" lathe that has a MT 5 taper in the spindle (parts catalog verifies this). This machine originally came with a headstock spindle sleeve to go from MT 5 to MT 3. If I put a regular old MT 5 center in it it sticks out approximately 4-5 inches beyond the face of the spindle so, in theory, the MT 5 taper actually starts out in front of the face of the spindle. If I measure the big end of the taper at the face of my spindle, it's approximately 1.625". I know that these sleeves are out there, I've seen them on the 'bay from time to time........I'm just hoping that they're not rare and machine specific. I could probably make one, but wanted to try a posting and see if someone might have one laying around.
You may have a proprietary taper, there's also a Morse #4-1/2 taper that measures
1.500" dia. at end of socket.
Thats a shame, this #5 is really clean and nice, hardened and ground. But the 1.625" point is about a 1/4" from the smallest dia.
Happy hunting dave [acme thread]
My Victor 1640 has a 6MT spindle hole. Victor does have an adapter sleeve that takes it down to 4MT but they want $190 for it. I just got a Bison 6MT dead center from ebay and it works but sticks out like 8" past the nose of my spindle.
Does anybody have a 6MT to 4MT sleeve that is meant for a lathe headstock?

I have another one
Size is 1.830 big end, 1.675 small end and 3.610 long. it has a #3 morse taper inside.
15.00 shipped. if you can use it.
Chuck
If I am doing this right, your sleeve has an outer Taper per inch of 0.0429. According to Machinery's Handbook a MT6 should have a taper of 0.05213 per inch. I assume therefore that your's may not be a MT6 on the outside.
Got the spindle sleeve from Chuck yesterday, it's just a tad small and sets recessed back into the spindle a bit but I believe that it will work o.k. Thanks again Chuck!
