Looking to buy parts to get a Greenerd #3E arbor press back into usable condition. Press had fallen over and broke the ratcheting mechanism casting, the handwheel, & counterweight into pieces. I bought the press from HGR in that condition for the Greenerd stand it was on to use for my current working #3 Greenerd in my shop. As it was priced accordingly.

Parts from my #3 do fit the #3E. So thinking parts from any of the other #3 series Greenerd presses might get the press usable in either a ratcheting or non-racheting configuration.

So if you have any parts (or donor presses) laying around for any of the Greenerd #3 presses (ratcheting or non-ratcheting) I'd be interested to hear from you. The 3-1/2 presses are much larger & heavier than the #3 series so parts from a 3-1/2 may or may not be of use?

PM me if you have any donor parts you might wish to sell.

Thanks

I suggest you consider having the pieces repaired rather than replaced. There are very skilled cast iron welders around. They make a living off of situations like this where they can make money by saving you money.

This guy, for example, gets parts shipped to him from all over the country. He is one of the best cast iron welders around, certainly in the western US.

You're probably hoping for a good deal but Greenerd does stock parts for that press.

Having heard prices quoted from Greenerd to other folks over the years I wasn't about to even try and price parts from them. If I can't find used donor parts then I may try and sell off the press as a "project" to someone else. As I already have a working #3 press. If no donor parts turn up, then to me, machining/modifying the ratcheting pinion shaft to make it non-ratcheting pinion shaft, is most doable option to get press in a working configuration.

Don't have all the pieces to the broken ratcheting casting so that repair path is difficult.

But figured I'd put a request out for any of the Greenerd No 3 series press donor parts and see if anything comes up.

I had a fanco #3 arbor press that was in the boat broken counterweight casting that parts were missing.
I dug up a piece of steel the make the counterweight.
But I also needed the ratch pawl I called fanco for the price of the pawl and asked about the C/W casting the price quoted was a no brainer but years later I saw on the net someone was looking for a C/W casting and stated the fanco quoted price and it was about 5X what I payed about $125.
One day at work a pawl showed up on my work bench showed with a note please fix ASAP Need bad they had called fanco they were out of stock and a mouth out and about double the price. I gave them the one off my press at home and had them order me the new one. I would fab up the C/W assembly

The counterweight (CW) casting is the least of my problems. That could be fixed easily by drilling two counter bore thru holes and installing socket head screws. Then covering screws w/ epoxy & paint and you'd never tell it was repaired.

It's the ratcheting mechanism casting that is the problem, (see post #1), Way more $$ than I am willing to spend for that part new from Greenerd. And its missing some of the broken pcs as well. Making a repair problematic. Locating donor parts is the easiest option but will be difficult to fins.

2nd option is modify the current ratcheting pinion to a non-racheting. Not too difficult but time consuming. 3rd option is to scrap or sell the remaining pcs. I bought this broken press for the Greenerd stand it was on for my working Greenerd No 3 so it owes me nothing.

Did you see the rust bucket 3 1/2 from HGR you told me about? I tried to buy it but never got a price with shipping. I tried to buy the parts I needed and have them scrap the rest. They were unable to take it it apart it was so rusted. I ended up taking what I had and made it work. I had to mount a counter weight from a dake I purchased for 5.00 some years ago and adapted it. I need to add a little more weight to the back side of the counter weight. I was lucky that I had the ratchet and pawl from another press I found. As of now, It works. I added a large cast iron wheel on the left side I purchase from eBay.

I saw its still there. Their price was ridiculous for that 'pile". I imagine if one of us got it home working w/ some kroil and heat from a torch it could be taken apart. The 3-1/2 is much larger than a #3, I don't think parts would fit? But I should make a call to Greenerd and confirm.

Glad you got yours back into service.
