Hi all-

I have Hardinge HSL with a Master Electric motor with a Master Unibrake unit on it. I have never worked with a spindle brake motor before, so some of this is a bit confusing to me. I could use some advice and help.

Pics of the nameplates:

In its "at rest" condition, the brake lever is against the stop and the spindle is stopped.

If I move the lever up, it will allow the spindle to rotate, but if I release the lever, it slowly closes and the spindle stops.

I do not want to just throw power at it yet until I understand how it works.

What is the proper operation of the brake unit? Does it need power to work? Will it 'open' when energized? Do you have to Manualy release it for the spindle to turn when you turn the machine on?

Af far as powering this, I have the choice of running with a known good RPC or a VFD. Advantage to me of the VFD is speed control.

Can anyone give me any advice on running the spindle brake unit with a VFD to control the speed? If i run the VFD at 50%, am I risking screwing up the brake unit?
