Blown start capacitor on RPC

Yesterday one of the start caps on my Anderson 7.5HP RPC blew up.

I'm not sure it if was just starting the idler motor or when the attached lathe started. I have replaced the capacitor and the idler now starts normally. The combination did work for the past 5-6 months.

The lathe is a '43 Monarch 10EE with a motor-generator drive. The AC motor is ~ 6HP and drives a DC generator. The generator output is not used until the spindle is started, driven by a 3HP DC motor. The lathe is not powered on until the RPC is running, so I wouldn't think that the start caps should be in the circuit when the lathe is supplying load.

Any ideas on why the cap would blow?

The so-called "start caps" that are paper/aluminum wound in a plastic case
eventually fail. You did not describe the type or voltage rating of your device but
even if it is within your operating limits it will not last like a oil filled type.
I use oil filled caps throughout my converter. No failures since it was built
over 7 years ago.
