I have a Nardini lathe with a 220v, 3ph, reversable motor. Motor rated at 6.3hp high speed and 4hp low. Motor starts and stops the gear train by direct drive. No clutch. Lathe has forward and reverse switch. I am NOT comfortable working with electrity. Am I better off using a VFD or RPC? I would prefer to use the gears in the headstock for speed control.

Can anyone explain why I'm unable to open or see the photos in the various threads. I'm logged in.

All help very much appreciated.

I use my rotary converter to operate two
speed (pole changing) motors on various hardinge
machines.

Gearhead lathes are tough starters though, so
you need to be sure to size whatever converter
or VFD you decide on, on the large size.
Also you don't want to go changing the speed
control, or the foward/rev switch on the fly
if you are using a VFD.

Jim and jackalope,

Just what I wanted to hear. Now to start gathering parts and someone to put it all together. I have downloaded some of the plans for RPCs.

Thanks for the information.
