My Index mill has the wire chart for for low or high voltage. The motor tag says 208-220 / 440 volts. I have it wired for low. I have a static phase converter that worked well with this machine in my old shop. When i wired everything up at my new shop, the motor started smoking after a min of running only a min. I checked the voltage out out of the panel and its putting out 280 volts. 280 goes into the converter and 280 comes out. Will this hurt the motor and make it smoke and get hot? Or did a bearing go bad while it was sitting and its rubbing the armature or something stupid?

I'm about to wire my leblond lathe in now...same thing.... only high or low voltage. Is the 280 volts bad? Thanks guys.

Yeah, you bet 280V is bad. Find out what it is supposed to be and call the power company asap if your entrance is truly 280V. You may also have some isolation transformer on the customer side that is causing it. Check into it.
