Surface Grinder - why this large capacitor?

I have a Jones & Shipman 540 surface grinder, a small machine which runs on three phase, 415 volts.

I bought it second hand and wondered why it has a large capacitor wired into the three phase supply? I have not seen this on other machine tools. The cabinet containing the capacitor is not factory fitted.

The machine has a three phase spindle motor and hydraulic pump motor.

The magnet is not electrical.

My guess is that I won't need the capacitor, but I am curious about why it was fitted.

If it means anything....this machine used to be in a prison workshop.

Thanks for any ideas.

I would suggest that you leave the power factor correction capacitor in place and functional, as long as you are still operating the equipment from a 415V source.

Its purpose is to reduce the line currents required to operate the machine. The prison it came from was probably being bill for excessively low power factor at the site or had a weak distribution system. It was an added expense to install it, and can only help leaving it intact.
