Taft Peirce DC Electric Chuck

I have a little Taft Peirce grinder with a Mellaphone Rectifier. I changed out the capacitor and still have no power to the chuck. Does anyone know anything on these Rectifiers? Maybe some more modern electronic components to update the power supply possibly?

Is it two boxes? And that is a Philco property tag?

Anyhow, I would suspect the "Mellaphone" unit to possibly be a set of selenium rectifiers, which could be replaced by some silicon rectifiers that would comfortably fit in a pill bottle (although I would not suggest that for an enclosure).
