I have a Milltronics vmc with a 5 horsepower 3 phase motor that I am retrofitting. I want to use a Hitachi vfd on single phase. I can purchase a WJ200 10 horsepower for $681 or a 15 horsepower for $744. Would there be an advantage with the 15 horsepower? (quicker rampup and rampdown, ect)

My experience with VFD's is that "Larger never hurts" to a degree of course.

In programming several different brands with the suggested 2:1 output rating that goes along with phase conversion (Not single phase input rated units) I have found that with very short ramp up or ramp down times, the VFD's easily fault with over current. While a larger unit will accept the very short ramp time.

This becomes significant when one is setting up to do ridged tapping on a mill, or when carrying heavy work on a lathe spindle. or even when only threading to a shoulder. "Instant reversing" is not the same with a small output VFD as it is with across the line 3ph! ;-)
