I have a 1ph 220v motor I want to select either direction of rotation with a drum switch. None of the motor leads have any kind of marking on them. Is there any way of determining which leads to switch to change direction of rotation?

Thnx - John C

There was a thread within the past few weeks with that same question ... can't remember if the motor had 9 leads or 12, but those leads were also unmarked. Scroll backwards & you should be able to find it.

Single phase reversing

With single phase motors, it's going to depend on the type of motor. Reversing split phase or cap start motors is accomplished by reversing the "polarity" of the start winding with respect to main winding. Start winding leads are usually marked 5 and 8. Since your leads aren't marked, you will need to dissemble the motor and find the start winding leads. One side can be realily found; the one that goes to the start cap and or the centrifugal switch. If the other end is not visually obvious, use a meter or test light and find continuity.
Some motors were not intended to be reversable and may not have the other side of the start winding "brought out" in the form of a lead. The common connection to the main winding is soldered and tied up within the windings.

Diagrams for common winding configurations can be found in many electrical and motor reference books and on the web as well.

Good luck

start windings

You may look carefully at the windings, and see one is a smaller gauge wire than the others. Thats the start winding.
