I am going to feed an 18 kVA transformer with a phase converter. What size RPC do I need to be able to power the transformer at full load?

Thanks Gary

Here is a guess,

1 KVA = 1.25 horsepower.

This would suggest a 25 hp idler and a 125 amp single phase supply to the RPC. You would need to fuse the transformer input to protect the transformer. The NEC states the amount but I seem to remember it being 125% of the rated amps of the transformer. Check the math but I think this will be about 90 amp fuses. I am assuming you are using a 240 volt RPC and stepping up to 480 volts with the transformer.

A 20 hp idler will produce a little less than the full load of the transformer but might be your best choice. It would need a 100 amp single phase circuit and still fuse the transformer at 90 amps on the 240 volt side.
