Size of starting capacitor for 1/2hp, 120vac motor?

I was given a neglected & abused wood turning lathe that has what looks to be a 1/2 hp motor. Motor shaft spins freely when twisted by the pulley.

There is a dented capacitor attached to two wires coming out of the side of the motor, wires twisted together and wrapped with tape. There are two wires coming out of a junction box on the motor going to the switch.

I removed these from the switch and connected to power. The motor hummed but did not turn.

I did a search on the forum and got nothing in the titles, and googled the question and got lists of capacitors and prices, but nothing to tell what mfd. went with what hp.

Is there a chart somewhere that specifies size of capacitor for hp of motor?

Can someone give me a ball park idea?

Thanks, Paul

Thank you Peter.

I did more research and find the right capacitor is more complex than X hp + Y volts = Z mfd.

I have a few salvaged starting caps and will do substitution & trial.

Just stumbled upon your single phase / three phase diagram. Very nice explanation.
