soft start recommendations

Rob,

A variable frequency drive makes the perfect soft start. You can dial in as much time as you feel your machine needs. For that size motor, you can't get anything more cost effective.

The folks on this site love Teco and Hitachi. I have several Hitachi drives and they're great.

+1

Low cost, easy to install, widely adjustable, etc.

$167.04 for the ACTech SMVector, just a little less for the Teco version, more for the Hitachi.

I was in the soft starter business for 20+ years. At that size, you will likely spend the same amount for a VFD.

The only reason to go with a soft starter would be to keep it simple(er). In that case, go for something as cheap as you can get. Siemens 3RW40 is cheap, so is the Cutler Hammer IT Series and maybe the Allen Bradley SMC-3 (but nothing sold by A-B is cheap). be wary of some off brands though, many of the cheaper ones fail to mention that they are soft start controllers, not starters, which means you ALSO need to have a motor starter as well, because controllers have no on-off capability or motor protection.

If, on the other hand, you already have an existing starter and you can leave it there, then a controller would be a little cheaper. ABB PSR Series starters are OK for that, Carlo Gavazzi makes a very cheap little 3 phase soft start controller too.
