Wanting to power my 220V three phase lathe with a VFD since I only have 220V single phase available. Motor is a 2 h.p. 1750 r.p.m. Do I need a VFD rate for 2 h.p. or will I have to get one with a higher h.p. rating to avoid losing h.p.? Thanks

Several manufacturers have VFDs rated for full hp with 220v single-phase input and 220v three-phase output.

Take a look at listings at DrivesWarehouse.com and other distributor sites.

You can also use __most__ VFDs designed for three-phase input on single-phase with a 50% reduction in output hp.
For example, you would use a VFD rated 5 hp to power your 2 hp motor in this configuration.

As per Leigh, but at 2hp motor, you need not worry about derating with single phase input, as the vast majority of VFD at this or lower power levels are rated for single
phase. OTOH, it is highly unlikely your lathe motor will ever be operated at a full 2hp demand, not like compressor service or driving a feed augur on a farm.

At 2 hp you add one...

We use an allen bradley 1305 3 hp model for our 2 hp south bend as was suggested by folks here.

Our bp has one hp motor with 1 hp vfd (came that way) and it faults if we load it too much.

When you select the model vfd you wish to use just look in the manual and it should specify the motor capacity on single phase input.

Ours was about 200 bucks on ebay.

Box under lathe was used...new they are not cheap.

Added a foot bar to stop lathe.
