    Default Wiring Help Please

I just purchased a Clausing 1771 ,15" Drill press, I have a Bridgeport and a Clausing lathed wired to a static converter, I thought it would be possible to pig tail off the connection to the lathe for the drill press, Since I only run one machine at a time, I wired it up ,but no go, the drill press has a starter and an internal mounted on-off switch, and 3 wires coming off the starter. red black, white. I wired to the converter pigtail and tried different combinations for the phantom? leg but same thing. I only get a hum from the transformer mounted atop the starter, I know Im kinda vague But can someone lead me in the right direction.
    Thanks Much

How big (hp) is the static converter and the drill press?

Do the voltages match? Sounds like the drill is wired for 480 and convertor is 240.

A static converter connects the third wire through a capacitor as a phase shifter, either for a given time, or until it comes up to voltage, at which point it is disconnected, and the machine runs "single phased".

it works best when the motor is directly connected, so that power is applied to the converter to start the machine.

if you turn on the converter, and then start the machine, the connection to the third wire may have already disconnected, and it may or may not re-connect when a load is put on it, depending on design. Then the machine would try to start single-phased.

Also, a lighter than spec load may not get enough phase shift on the third wire to make it start..... I would have thought 3/4 on a 1 HP converter might work, possibly not. Then also the motor will be trying to start essentially single-phased.

If you get the control voltage on the "starter wire", it also may not work, but probably won't hum.

My next question was it because it was a 1 hp converter for a 3/4 hp motor, the motor is wired for 220v , I was wrong its not the transformer humming atop the starter its the coil or what ever works the starter that's humming. I have tried to let the lathe run and then start the press , but no help same thing,
Do i have to have the motor starter installed, or can it be wired from the converter to the switch, then motor? thanks again this might be way off but I don,t know what to do about this,
