Ingersol Rand Type 30 1930ish 2HP
GE Repulsion Induction Motor 5SCR225/ set for 60 cycle, 220
Problem: kicks breaker after a few seconds at start up. Sparks pretty good around brushes. Brushes gummed up, will clean with solvent. Could use any useful information about cleaning.
Brushes gummed up...you need to remove them, clean the slots where they slide,
and make sure the springs acutally move them up/down in the slot.
The commutator will be "gummed up" as well. Clean it, and check for wear (gouges
and scoring marks where the brushes ride) even if the comm does not need machined,
undercut the mica with an old hacksaw blade (grind the set off the sides)
to at least clean the junk from in between the copper segments.
