The only carbide tipped knives or solid carbide knives I can find for a Makita 2040 planer are insanely expensive, $600 - $1000 for a set. Does anyone have a less expensive source?

If not, I can buy a pair of generic carbide tipped knives from American National Knife that do not have the slots for about $250. The size I need is 15 ¾ x 1 ⅜ x 5/32". How hard would it be to find a shop to edm the slots? Would the price be prohibitive? Would the blades still be flat after edm?

Can probably just mill the slots, the carbide carrier is not normally hard at all.

*if* the carbide insert is narrow that would work. I have a set of carbide tipped knives for my 8" jointer that use a carbide insert that is almost ½" wide, so that would interfere.
