I'm 34. I recently discovered I have an allergy to wheat Gluten. I have always been healthy and have even poked fun at gluten allergies figuring it was a made up thing to sell more groceries. Turns out this shit has been steadily grinding me down over the past 7 years and without it I don't feel twice my age anymore.
Constant "brain fog" cognitively like a bad hangover all the time. I have been taking the maximum dose of Advil and a double dose of Claratin to lessen this for 5+ years.
My feet, joints and back hurt constantly. They snap crackle and pop all the time.
Lymph nodes on my abdomen would swell up to blueberry size and fluctuate, especially after drinking beer.
I used to run all the time 3-5 miles a day. I was 6'3 and a thin 225 lbs for a long time. I've been 300 with a belly and hiking with my kids does me in.
Felt fatigued all the time. Some nights I could sleep 10 hours and still be tired.
Went to the ER for chest pains from panic attacks twice. I thought for sure I was having a heart attack.
I used to be a person that got more shit done before breakfast than most do all day and that slowly turned into accomplishing 2 hours of work in a 10 hour day sometimes.
I have not developed a new product in 2 years. I used to bring something to market every couple months.
It has been a week. One week without Gluten. I can say without hesitation I haven't felt this good in 7 years. I wake up after 6 hours of sleep excited to get into the shop and make stuff. I haven't had an advil or claritin or any medication. My mind is clear and focused. My joints and feet don't hurt. I can't tell where my lymph nodes are anymore.
Fuck I wish I wasn't so stubborn and looked into this sooner.
Boy, this sure hits close to home. The brain fog, the tired after 10 hours of sleep, the 2 hours of work in a 10 hour day. On a rough day, I'd lose visual focus, too. I'd look at a tape measure, and simply couldn't see the lines, no matter how I tried to focus. And, I'm about a decade younger than you, so it wasn't age.
I was "diagnosed" with lupus in 2013. Much of the same symptoms you had. Never could get the blood tests to show anything conclusively, but doc still figured it had to be, and treated me accordingly. I had improvement enough to function well enough, but never enough to feel 'right.' Figured such is life for someone with an autoimmune disease.
In late 2018, started going downhill pretty hard. Docs threw a few meds at me - daily prednisone for months at a time. No improvement whatsoever. Got to the point where I was starting to work on a plan for closing my shop, as I couldn't effectively run it. That was going to be especially painful, as I had just ordered my first brand new machine, after having run old paid for junk since starting.
Finally realized the docs weren't going to help, so started researching other stuff. Figured it had to be lupus worsening, so I thought for sure it was sugar related, but researched all the other stuff that could potentially cause inflammation (nuts, certain fruits, even tomatoes and peppers, etc). Decided to try an exclusion diet that restricted everything - basically ate grilled meat and vegetables - then reintroduce things one at a time.
On the 5th day of the exclusion diet, I was on top of the world. Didn't even remember feeling that good ever before. Reintroduced bread first. Completely fell on my face. Exclude it again, and reintroduce other things, no problem. Bread, complete crash. Was able to come off prednisone. Symptoms I just thought were normal (night sweats, etc) went away. Lost 15 pounds in a matter of days, and haven't gained an ounce of it back, despite eating sugars, gluten free breads, etc these days.
Only thing is, the minimal amount of contact that causes a flare up is ridiculous. Restaurants really become a game of Russian Roulette. Cross contamination from spices that are packaged in a plant that processes other things is a real issue that's gotten me a couple times. I had one flare up we couldn't figure out, until my wife realized a new kind of cooking oil she used had a label that said 'may contain wheat.' Cooking oil, for Pete's sake! Each time, it's 5-6 days of misery, and all the issues (including night sweats and whatnot), come back overnight.
But, yes. I know exactly where you're coming from, and I too wish I hadn't been so stubborn.
