How a food allergy can effect your life and business

That's damn interesting! Seems similar to the DDT stuff back in the day. Actually some say the rid of DDT has brought back the population of the hawk, walking stick, praying mantis and a bunch of other stuff.

And the bald eagle. I think that stuff made the eagles lay eggs where the shell wouldn't harden, and the babies wouldn't hatch.

I have had many times where the fact that I am allergic to certain things made my life low key hell. It's life though

My wife and I went on a "cleansing" diet a few years ago. It wasn't something I was so much for but wanted to be supportive. It was really restrictive, no alergen foods what so ever, damn little left to eat. No gluten, no dairy, no nuts, no corn, etc. I have bad hay fever, when it's in full swing I would be taking multiple medications and still miserable. We started this diet in the spring a few weeks before hay fever season. I didn't notice it starting until people we were around were complaining about how bad it was, it wasn't affecting me at all, zero. There are no foods that I have problems with but that was quite a wakeup call. Funny how important food is to our health, and how most of what we eat is bad for us and I am not including processed stuff in that list.

My brother had digestive and lethargy issues for many years. He went to a diet specialist, who put him on a gluten free diet. Lots of fruits, vegetables, etc., and by the end of the week he almost couldn't get out of bed he was so sick. It turns out he was allergic to Salicylates, which are common in fruits, vegetables, spices, and medications. The symptoms are very similar to gluten, but related a different allergen. Here's a link to information on this allergy: Salicylate Sensitivity: Causes, Symptoms and Foods to Avoid

I am still feeling good. Definitely got my life back.

What I've learned is that most gluten sensitivity is celiac-ish, or atleast the stuff that makes the news. My symptoms don't align with celiac at all I guess I'm sensitive to a different type of wheat protein. If I get some gluten in me a little bit doesn't wreck me, but I can tell within minutes if I ate something with wheat in it (restaurants like to put flour/pancake mix in eggs to make omelettes faster BTW). My brain slows down like a sinus headache or a hangover for awhile if I eat some. I'm down to around 250, good energy, my back hasn't gone out in years now (used to be a regular thing If I lifted something heavy), haven't had an allergy pill since before this thread was started, I don't get colds all the time like I was for awhile. I was getting poison oak frequently in the summers, haven't gotten it since I stopped gluten.

Don't really miss the wheat anymore. I've had enough bad facsimiles of wheat containing things that I just don't even try them anymore.

I miss real beer though. Budweiser makes this Sorgum beer called Redbridge that's decent, but it's just not the same.

I'm 34. I recently discovered I have an allergy to wheat Gluten. I have always been healthy and have even poked fun at gluten allergies figuring it was a made up thing to sell more groceries. Turns out this shit has been steadily grinding me down over the past 7 years and without it I don't feel twice my age anymore.

Constant "brain fog" cognitively like a bad hangover all the time. I have been taking the maximum dose of Advil and a double dose of Claratin to lessen this for 5+ years.

My feet, joints and back hurt constantly. They snap crackle and pop all the time.

Lymph nodes on my abdomen would swell up to blueberry size and fluctuate, especially after drinking beer.

I used to run all the time 3-5 miles a day. I was 6'3 and a thin 225 lbs for a long time. I've been 300 with a belly and hiking with my kids does me in.

Felt fatigued all the time. Some nights I could sleep 10 hours and still be tired.

Went to the ER for chest pains from panic attacks twice. I thought for sure I was having a heart attack.

I used to be a person that got more shit done before breakfast than most do all day and that slowly turned into accomplishing 2 hours of work in a 10 hour day sometimes.

I have not developed a new product in 2 years. I used to bring something to market every couple months.

It has been a week. One week without Gluten. I can say without hesitation I haven't felt this good in 7 years. I wake up after 6 hours of sleep excited to get into the shop and make stuff. I haven't had an advil or claritin or any medication. My mind is clear and focused. My joints and feet don't hurt. I can't tell where my lymph nodes are anymore.

Fuck I wish I wasn't so stubborn and looked into this sooner.

Boy, this sure hits close to home. The brain fog, the tired after 10 hours of sleep, the 2 hours of work in a 10 hour day. On a rough day, I'd lose visual focus, too. I'd look at a tape measure, and simply couldn't see the lines, no matter how I tried to focus. And, I'm about a decade younger than you, so it wasn't age.

I was "diagnosed" with lupus in 2013. Much of the same symptoms you had. Never could get the blood tests to show anything conclusively, but doc still figured it had to be, and treated me accordingly. I had improvement enough to function well enough, but never enough to feel 'right.' Figured such is life for someone with an autoimmune disease.

In late 2018, started going downhill pretty hard. Docs threw a few meds at me - daily prednisone for months at a time. No improvement whatsoever. Got to the point where I was starting to work on a plan for closing my shop, as I couldn't effectively run it. That was going to be especially painful, as I had just ordered my first brand new machine, after having run old paid for junk since starting.

Finally realized the docs weren't going to help, so started researching other stuff. Figured it had to be lupus worsening, so I thought for sure it was sugar related, but researched all the other stuff that could potentially cause inflammation (nuts, certain fruits, even tomatoes and peppers, etc). Decided to try an exclusion diet that restricted everything - basically ate grilled meat and vegetables - then reintroduce things one at a time.

On the 5th day of the exclusion diet, I was on top of the world. Didn't even remember feeling that good ever before. Reintroduced bread first. Completely fell on my face. Exclude it again, and reintroduce other things, no problem. Bread, complete crash. Was able to come off prednisone. Symptoms I just thought were normal (night sweats, etc) went away. Lost 15 pounds in a matter of days, and haven't gained an ounce of it back, despite eating sugars, gluten free breads, etc these days.

Only thing is, the minimal amount of contact that causes a flare up is ridiculous. Restaurants really become a game of Russian Roulette. Cross contamination from spices that are packaged in a plant that processes other things is a real issue that's gotten me a couple times. I had one flare up we couldn't figure out, until my wife realized a new kind of cooking oil she used had a label that said 'may contain wheat.' Cooking oil, for Pete's sake! Each time, it's 5-6 days of misery, and all the issues (including night sweats and whatnot), come back overnight.

But, yes. I know exactly where you're coming from, and I too wish I hadn't been so stubborn.

I feel bad for you guys.
I have mostly lost 3 days this week to whatever it is that's going around.
(SARS, Flue, Corona, Swine - whatever they call this one...)
It wasn't really all that bad, just slow to recover from this one is all.

It reminds me how much I would rather be in pain as to be sick!

Migraines triggered by food.
The killers, red wine, blue cheese, aged cheese. Twenty minute reaction time.
Others, any meat cured with nitrates such as ham and bacon, lunch meat, ect.
Sodium Glutimate, pickles, beans, green beans, nuts and some citrus.
Duration about three days.
Resolution, food log and restricted diet.

My family can't do sulfites. I get some odd problems if I eat/drink them. Cider, wine, some dried fruit. Weird stuff.

One thing I have begun to realize is that my sensitivity to all the stuff my body doesn't like correlates heavily with my stress level. The more stressed I am, the more reactive my immune system is.

The world has reached a really dangerous place. Man competes directly with insects for the same food sources. We are only able to grow enough food for the world population through pesticides. Back when the book Silent Spring caused an uproar one town went pesticide free but had to give it up after a couples years as the bugs virtually wiped them out.

I believe that the chemicals used caused all the health problems, but as long as the population keeps increasing they can’t be eliminated.

Read up on Mosaic the phosphorus producer. Recently had a sinkhole open up under a gypstack dumping a billion gallons of highly toxic waste water in the the Florida aquifer. Shut them down! Can’t, they supply 60% of the worlds phosphorous used for food production, AND the world is running out of phosphorous!

The only permanent solution is population reduction.
