Chinese insert vs American/Japanese?

I don't know what your experience regarding Chinese inserts are, but I've found they have really upped their games in the last few years regarding insert quality.

As long as you use the insert at their recommended feed/speed/material, they produce a fantastic finish that is little different than their American counterpart costing 10 times more (we're talking a difference of about 10RMB per insert for Chinese WNMG ones vs 10 US dollar per insert for say a Iscar or Kennemetal ones)

Don't look on ebay, they don't provide any info on their inserts, but from Taobao/TMall they have all the relevant info on their inserts, and if you follow them, they work great.

I wouldn't even be surprised if those big American/Japanese names are all made in China now...

I've been using them since about 2019 and was kinda surprised at how good they are for the price.

My son Matt has the right idea, If you don't support USA products then you should not expect USA wages.

Very likely a machine operator or toolmaker in China could not afford a car or a home lathe, mill or surface grinder..

Agree we should be environment friendly and everybody should just walk....not.

IMHO one should support countries with a similar lifestyle, or you condone giving up yours.

If we all bought overpriced and overtaxed American made stuff nowadays there would be nobody doing work in this country. Until the tax situation gets under control people will look for cheaper alternatives. I support American made when I can, but paying 10X for something does not fit into the equation, unless I need it right now. American made isn't what it used to be either.... a lot of American made stuff is shit nowadays, but that's just a product of the times and the quality of younger people in this country. Our hay day was in the past.... Politics and Big Govt' rule (RUIN) everything now.

That is what I have been saying, you're buying a lot of Chinese products and not realizing it. I doubt Iscar is alone in this.

Now I buy Chinese insert because shipping and sale of products via taobao in Taiwan is very easy. Low shipping cost and next to no tariff. When I buy anything from the US not only am I paying for an expensive item, I'm paying high shipping and having to shop around because many sellers refuse to ship outside of the US. Furthermore tariff is very high.

A lot of these inserts seem to be Chinese branded, so perhaps companies like Iscar offshored the production and the people who have been making them went out and made their own brands. But as long as you follow their recommendation for the inserts you get good results.

There are Taiwanese stores selling Taiwanese and Japanese inserts but in reality are made in China, while still charging exorbitant prices for it.

China has huge Carbide deposits, it only makes sense for them to produce a decent insert at lower price. Maybe if we ship the Democrats over there they can inflate everything like they do here. In no time America will be cheaper than China LOL. In the meantime I just placed my order for American Steel... up 300% since the Coup d'état in 2020, gasoline up 130%..... I'll keep buying my cheap inserts for basic work, for higher end I might do an American Insert bought second hand, or at an auction. I'm not paying 10X the cost(Retail price)for an American branded insert New from store. Now welders that is a whole different situation, I'll buy both Chinese and American made, because they both fit the bill, with American made used for the more industrial work.

Haven't used Iscar in 25 years.

Our tooling is mostly Sandvik.
And if we buy stuff from MSC, I always check the box that says Made in USA to filter out as much cheap china shit as possible.
We have no problem overpaying a little to buy USA made stuff.

Well if you can afford it and write off the expenses as a business that is fine. If you are a hobby machinist, (I am not one, just for reference ) you might buy China made inserts and do well. Probably 90% of machining in this country is general machining, so precision made and ground inserts aren't always required. Like I said, I'll buy US made second hand all day long if the price is right. I'm not paying $30 an insert for new Retail and 10% sales tax on top, just for general use. I stopped doing Aerospace Machining under the Prior King Obama. When he decided to attack my conservative Americans, I stopped providing my skills and manufacturing , will do the same under the current Occupant. I'm doing general manufacturing now. No High End Boeing, Lockheed, etc. parts from me until we get a better Leader in the WH who represents most Americans.

Actually I wish this site would segregate the Party Politics via members as an option, so we can just ignore the other half (which is most likely a lot less than half) who pretend like Biden Regime is helping any American's other than the SUPER RICH. I like Sandvik for at home, when I did Military components Walter was my go to Inserts and Tooling.
General machining I use Valenite brand as well... which is also under Walter Umbrella.
That being said, I have a friend who uses alot of the cheaper Chinese inserts for his basic machining and he has good luck with the quality, both in threading and basic turning of ODS, IDS, etc.
