I have had polite posts deleted and have received a warning for a polite rebuttal. We have responders making grossly incorrect comments about subjects they have no personal knowledge of or experience in. When that happens, a rebuttal and correction should occur whether it is from me or someone else. My responses were not insulting or impolite. However, corrections can be embarrassing, not because of the correction, but because of the stupidity of the offending statement. That should never be grounds for either a deletion or a warning, yet it happens all to often because said moderator cannot tell the difference.
I've had it happen way too often in the Mfg section. That moderator will ban me just for posting anything in his section. It looks like it is pretty easy moderating it now that there is rarely a new post there. Great job there Jag.

I'd be happy to post some of the PM's that I got from Jag that showed my offenses. Pretty much anything that I post.

I stuck him on ignore quite a while back when he seriously lost the plot on politics and covid stuff.

Plus I was tired to decoding his gibberish, and like you thought him a serial liar or at minimum confabulator, though I take issue with you WRT his age. More like 550 years to pack in all he claimed.

So if he's got himself banned, he most likely deserved it for thinking that he could keep throwing shit without consequences. I'll shed no tears nor ask for a ban to be lifted.

PDW
I've read a lot of his gibberish and skipped over a lot of it over they years and for all the military stories like you'd expect to hear from General Patton he's never really said that he was in the military that I've seen.

I personally think he has read a lot about the military and what they do/have done though.

There are a lot of members here that post pretty mundane stuff but termite's posts are kind of unforgettable and I think that's his point.

I have been skipping his bizarre posts for a long time. He has some knowledge but fills his posts with too many rants and nonsense. I have not missed him.

To be fair, most of the guys getting banned are part of the reason that S:N has gone down a bit. I understand that not every post you make is actually crossing the line, but as mothers everywhere tell their children: "watch it buster, you're already skating on thin ice!" I remember getting a few good cracks for sour looks back when. Some need that to keep them in line, some don't.

Can you expand upon that? What do you mean by that?

I mean that once a person gets 5 warnings they get an automatic ban from the forum software. See here regarding both multiple user IDs and automatic bans due to warning accumulations.:

Banning Members from Specific Forums

We have recently noticed that there are reoccurring members that have been disturbing the peace regarding topics that are more prone in specific forums but still provide insights on forums geared towards machining. Therefore, we decided to create a ban that limits certain members from those threads, while still having access to the rest of the forum. Members who have been specifically banned from forums will not see those sections anymore on their end.
PS: Please avoid creating another profile to post on the banned thread, this will lead to a permanent ban

NOTE REGARDING WARNINGS

Warnings are kinda like a yellow card and they accumulate within a month span. After a month they are restored back to 0. The goal is to reduce the number of insults that have been surfacing more frequently in the forum recently.

- 5 warnings: 3 day ban
- 10 warnings: 1 week ban
- 15 warnings: 1 month ban
- 25 warnings: 3 months ban
- 30 warnings: 6 months ban

=====================

And FYI it is usually readily apparent for mods to see if you have multiple user IDs. The forum software makes that easy to spot most of the time. There's clearly no good reason to do that unless planning to try to anonymously troll.

There sounds like a deeper underlying problem, I hope he is well, I have had expirence of similar behaviour, there was a cause, it wasn’t good. Sometimes folk need help, and mostly they don’t want it, I wouldn’t like that to happen, maybe I’m paranoid, I hope so, we all need to care about each other even if we are being assholes.
Hard I know
Mark
Mark,
It's only paranoia if they're not out to get you. And as my old boss used to say, assholes do an essential job. Without them we'd all be full of ...
George

The fuckers will have to get in line, I’m doing more damage to me than they do!
No seriously I’m not really paranoid but a little helps balance the books took me years to realise the world is full up on sociopaths, psychopaths, the unholy offspring of the two ( politicians) religious nutcases, plain nutcases racists murderous nutcases accountants
And that’s the good guys!
What’s left are really bad people
And some have WMDs

I don't see how anyone having multiple ID's could be detected. Is it based in ISP addresses? If so, that is hardly a foolproof method. For example, I live in a large dormitory-like dwelling with over 20 other people. We all have different interests - some of us love baking, some love miniature Schnauzers, some of us love antiquing, and some of us love more traditional things like candy dish collecting and gay porn. But regardless, we all love the practical side of machining. That's right - over 20 of us all have PM accounts. Since we all live under one roof and have one internet provider, our ISP is all the same. To save money, we use only free porn sites and all share the exact same computer. Other than our log in credentials, there is no distinction between our accounts.

So how can anyone from afar tell if 3 or 4 us die overnight and the others decide to take over their accounts?

That explains why Jag will wait until I post five times and then message me with all five of my posts and ban me for posting them no matter what they say. Here's a good example:
You seem to have a reading comprehension problem. Nothing in my posts says that "EV's will never work out" but rather that EVs are not appropriate for ALL of us or even most of us as a couple of non-EV owners here keep pushing.

And it's not right wing or left wing, simply issues of practicality. I know staunch Republicans who own EVs as well as liberal Democrats who like the IDEA of EVs but choose not to own one as not suited to their lifestyle.

In post after post you try to project your fixation with left-right ideology on the rest of us.
Pretty much every post that you have ever posted regarding EV's is gloom and doom and "it will never work because....". You talk about lines at charging stations while you can "always" fill your empty tank with gasoline in less than 5 minutes. Must be you have never gotten gas at Costco. I've waited in line for over 10 minutes just to get to the pump and this is a fairly common occurrence there.

This may shock you but the entire USA isn't like Massachusetts. Maybe it would help if you got out a little more.

If you wait in line to buy gas at Costco...that's a personal issue. That's a Costco issue You're not obligated to buy gas at Costco, all to save a few cents. Punish Costco for their shitty service by buying your gas elsewhere, at stores that have no waiting. Your example has little, if any, merit.

And nobody is obligated to charge their car at a charging station that has a long waiting line at it. I've personally seen a lot of charging stations and have never seen a single one that had a waiting line. Ever.

But I have seen lines at gas stations where the station is a dime cheaper than the station down the street.

And it isn't shitty service at Costco. Quite the contrary. They have attendants that help keep the lines moving, tell people to drive around the car ahead of them to an open pump. The only reason that Costco sometimes has lines is that they charge less for gas. I generally drop my wife off at the store to shop while I go fill the tank with gas.

And what's with the "punish" thing?

Charging stations are so far apart here one would need to tow a diesel generator to be safe especially in winter, I have to think the battery output at -10 to -20 will be somewhat less than it might be in warmer climates

It depends on how far you have to travel. Some sparsely populated areas aren't as good of a fit for EV's as densely populated areas are. I still remember flying in to LA in 1989. It was my first experience with smog. When I got off of the plane it was like standing under the vent at a laundromat. I've been back since then and it is a lot better now due to regulations clamping down on pollution. EV's can and will have a direct effect on air quality.

And you are correct that batteries don't have as much power in very cold weather. But that doesn't mean that you can't charge your EV to 100% at home and use it to go to the grocery store in the winter unless the grocery store is a couple of hundred miles away.

Here's some information on charging stations in Idaho. How far to your nearest one? https://chargehub.com/en/countries/united-states/idaho.htm

Then, there's the issue that EVs are soul-less drones that no man (or woman) can drive without losing 90% of what makes them a human.

A decent gas powered vehicle is Jimi Hendrix. The very best EV is Paul Shaffer noodling on his keyboard.

It is but I think by now most of the major brands use some of the battery charge to heat the pack, making it more efficient. It might sound strange but the net effect is that you gain more capacity than you lose in the heating process.

Oops! I suppose someone will read that post also as "doom and gloom".

Actually he did. He was in combat engineers in Vietnam.

That's likely where the handle "thermite" comes from as it's one of the tools of the trade.

I don't know all the story behind why he got banned, and I won't venture to guess all the reasons. But..I do recognize - like it or not - he was a part of what made this board what it is, and that is to say he made it a better place. I never had any trouble understanding him and when I found his posts too long I just skimmed them....it was never hard to get the gist of what he was saying.

So keep in mind - you mighta thought he was a dick, but he was our dick.
I'll once again use the analogy of Gordon. He had made numerous useful posts over the years, especially in metrology but more recently seemed to be on a crusade to pick as many fights as possible. He did some things as a moderator that got him banned for life. Hopefully thermite will have had time to reflect and pause before spewing insults so he won't go the same route.

Mainly because that example just doesn't happen. Are you aware how few people actually are machinists and want to participate in message boards much?

I beg to disagree. While thermite often offered valuable insights he also had a habit, especially recently of insulting members without real cause, often seemingly just to be "the smartest guy in the room". In other words, not in response to being insulted or even outrageous posts, simply what used to be called "flaming", insults merely for the sake of insults.

In some ways he almost seemed to be trying to make up for the absence of Gordon, who was notorious for such behavior.

Perhaps some are new, or have short memories but not too long ago trading insults sometimes reached the level of physical threats, attempts (and threats) of doxxing, including one chronic insult thrower threatening to "reveal" him to his business customers. The powers that be were right to try and rein this stuff in.
I've noticed that the site seems to have calmed down quite a bit since the format was changed. I hope that Thermite comes back. I'm aware that he could be somewhat abrasive but all in all, he is very knowledgable.
I sorta miss Gordon, though, since I often lay awake nights thirsting for more information about Denmark.......:rolleyes5:
