I'd leave the TA off until needed. Yes, it will wear down the rear shears badly. I had a 9" years ago that had the TA on the lathe and yeah it wore out the shears on the underside of the saddle badly from all of the weight of the TA. Just my opinion.
Cut a National 40 taper in the spindle and move on. May not be able to put the driving keys on the face of the spindle and I wouldn't worry about it.
I had a old No. 3 B & S horizontale mill I converted it to a National 40 taper. It was so much easier to get tooling for it rather than dealing...
32-tooth is standard tooth count for use with a 8-pitch leadscrew. 24-tooth count is used on a 6-pitch leadscrew. This is for imperial pitches. I don't deal with metric or any other pitches where the tooth count may require 24-tooth gear.

john.k,
You're no fun. We got to keep the deer population in check, and keep the hog population under control, too.
Oh, be no more invites to deer leases from the tool companies we buy tooling from, too.
At my first job way back in time, the boss put me in the office to do his dirty work per say. Meantime they hired a machinist to take my place. Dude showed up for work that morning, had no tools. Shop manager came in and asked if I had a scale/rule he could use until he could get one. I had a...
Be a lot of work, maybe, to put either a spline or multiple number of keyways on the shaft and duplicate that to the gears. Another thought here.
The key here is to distribute the loading across the full circurference of the shaft and gear and not just in one spot or keyway.
