    Tramming a benchtop mill

Home builts of any earthly origin are also strongly discouraged (ask me how I know .) I can understand the desire to keep professionally focused, and excluding these machines has the useful side effect of weeding out a lot of inexperience. There are other forums that are more friendly to...

    Tramming a benchtop mill

He's using German epoxy (Diamont) that is specifically formulated for this purpose, this isn't just some off the shelf epoxy. He also mentioned that he put release on the surfaces, so this is likely fully reversible. Scraping is a much more complex solution as manipulating the column over and...

    Counterfeit Mitutoyo Digital Calipers

I wish this was true, but Amazon has a long history of being unable (or unwilling) to deal with aggressive counterfeiting. Returns are the problem of the seller, and with the margins they are making and the vast majority of sales not being detected by the end users (who are often not...

    Counterfeit Mitutoyo Digital Calipers

Pretty sure the 'Coolant Proof' line that are silver in color, Carbide jaw versions and the Solar powered units are not targeted for counterfeiting as they are not as common, and are a nicer calipers to use IMHO. Also, there are a lot of subtle variations of the basic model, some without the...

Just in case you've never seen a Chinese Starrett box label before.

LOL, we do get a lot of shaking. I think it is that Mitutoyo is not seen as that sort of manufacturer and they stay in their lane. OK (Obishi Keiki), Uni Seki and Fujita are all leaders in that market. And you gave me an excuse to show one of my treasures, a TOTO (yes, the toilet maker)...

Just in case you've never seen a Chinese Starrett box label before.

Brazil (and recently India) have very restrictive import laws and heavy tariffs that make it beneficial for manufacturers to build local factories, Mitutoyo created a large production facility back in the 70's IIRC. They really do region specific products, I had to buy my set of Mitutoyo...

At least know that it was American chicken's that scratched that...

Just in case you've never seen a Chinese Starrett box label before.

I believe Abom79 and NYCNC both have Starrett factory tours posted. I haven't seen anything on Mitutoyo (and have yet to make it down to their main plant myself) but I'll bet there is something out there in Japanese if you look hard enough.

Just in case you've never seen a Chinese Starrett box label before.

A few years back I decided to treat myself and imported my first Starrett tool, a Starrett C434M-300 hardened square set, as Mitutoyo doesn't market this type of square here in Japan. They only use fixed squares over here and I really prefer the (I believe Starrett invented format) adjustable...

    Mitutoyo OMM-25 (109-101) Micrometer teardown

I just picked this up for a couple thousand Yen, it looked to be in great condition and although I have new digital micrometers I thought it would be cool to have a mechanical micrometer that could theoretically measure microns. When it arrived it was clear that it would need disassembly and...

    "Electronic indicator" IP65 400mm 0.5µm

You may not be personally culpable, or supportive of what's going on, and I realize that making clear any opposition could put you at risk, but you should at least understand that on principal we won't provide you assistance for anything short of some purely humanitarian effort. I can't imagine...

    Newbie scraper in Japan

Yes, I saw Robin's modification of his hand scrapers, it was on my mind for a long time as ever getting a Biax seemed remote. The Biax factory version of the shorter holder is supposed to be stiff I believe, so I didn't bother to try and add any flex. I agree it wouldn't likely help anything...

    "Electronic indicator" IP65 400mm 0.5µm

You haven't explained why a standard glass or magnetic scale won't work, any kind of plunger that long is going to have to contend with spring linearity, stiction, deflection, gravitational droop and a host of other issues. There's a reason you haven't found one. If your worry is about the IP...

    Newbie scraper in Japan

So I know this is just more procrastination, but I'm one of those people who wants to be fully prepared before undertaking anything new and challenging. The Biax came with three of the brazed spring steel blades, a 15/150 R20 which is a very thin (1.2mm) piece of carbide with a 20mm radius, a...
