machining keyway in 8" bore update

I hope it holds up. We have at least 12 of these to do.

machining keyway in 8" bore update

I had to pull off these for a little while but I got back on them today. I made an indexable shell mill that takes sumitomo inserts like a wez cutter. It works great.

    machining keyway in 8" bore

We dont get to alter the design. We just have to machine as the customer designed it.

    machining keyway in 8" bore

That would probably work but the customer wants a 1 5/16 keyway. Plus these are not real thick by the time you get the keyway in there. They want the keyway .790" deep

    machining keyway in 8" bore

These parts are just spacers for a steel mill. The keyway just has to slide over an 1 1/4" key. Im just guessing but I think these are for a slitter in a tube mill. Its kind of like a rotary shear that cuts the coils down to the proper width to make steel tubing. They are sort of like giant...

    machining keyway in 8" bore

We have bars for our planer and the clapper box is mounted out on the end of the bar. I think the longest bar is about 35" long. We cut a long keyway like that one time and then the customer had the part heat treated and the keyway got tighter. It was too hard to cut so I had to mount a grinder...

    machining keyway in 8" bore

I really need an 1 1/4 carbide facemill that mounts like a shell mill and takes inserts something like apkt but is no longer than 1". I cant seem to find one. I might have to make one. The high speed shell mill I am using now is slowing me down especially with the heat treated 4140.

I would say poking them on the planer takes about the same amount of time but milling is much better quality and its much less work for the operator. The planer you have to feed by hand. The mill just requires attention when adjusting for the next cut.

    machining keyway in 8" bore

The only other way we have to do them is to poke them out on the planer

    machining keyway in 8" bore

I really dont know. This way takes a while and just wanted to get a quote on wire edm. You may be right. This way may be cheaper.

    machining keyway in 8" bore

Thats the problem everyone we have checked with says they are too long.

    machining keyway in 8" bore

We usually cut keyway on a key seater but these parts are 18 1/2" long and too long for the keyseater. Anybody know of anybody close to Alliance Ohio that could wire edm these.

    machining keyway in 8" bore

Here is a picture of machining a 1 5/16 keyway in a heat treated 4140 8" bore with a right angle head on a Bullard boring mill.

    M00 not working

I got it to work. I had the M00 right after a G71 roughing cycle. To get it to work, I just put a space between the end of the roughing cycle and the M00 Line.

    M00 not working

i am running a leadwell lathe with fanuc oi-tc control and i need to stop a program in the middle. I programmed an M00 on its own line but the control ignores it and just keeps going.
