Thanks again Denis, Just a word on the nameless site, it gives me a google safety alert saying "unsafe to proceed" The site's DNS info expired 2000 odd days ago. I went to the site under cover and it looks awesome and just what I need - just looks to be something wrong with the routing or admin...
What's bugging me is the look of it all- the 1/2" tube is too big. I need the 5/16 thread for clamping power but if I get partially threaded bolts and turn the shaft to 1/4 I can braze to 3/8 tube which should look more proportional. I found some ok end caps but if I brazed in a ball bearing at...
Follow up here. I got a small O/A rig 2nd hand for $150 and a Uniweld 71 small airline torch for another $60 with a #0 brazing tip. Found 56% silver solder on ebay for $4 a foot, just bought 2 feet to see if this was going to pan out. It took we a week of half days to learn the process and...
Thinking more about what you say Jim - would propane almost be a better heat for SS brazing than Acetylene? Higher flow of heat that is less focused? An Oxy-Propane kit seems to have a max of about 6000F. Seems that might get this job done and be cheaper to refill.
I'll have the materials in...
Thanks Jim! That helps a lot bc Ive been watching alot of youtube demos seeing them move the torch the way you describe - kinda pushing the heat or snow plowing it (?) towards the joint w/o blasting it. You really put the 'why' into solid metrics. Good to know about the tips I've seen guys...
I have a good 1930's era 2 burner gas stove in my shop, just thinking out loud but it seems like heating the parts in an iron pan will bring them uniformly to about 600F. Then I can kiss it with a torch (even propane) and be very close to the liquid state of the solder. Sounds pretty good, like...
Jim, Thanks on that. When you say "larger tip than I might otherwise use" I've never welded or brazed so can i turn that back around on you and ask what tip would you otherwise be using? Right now I'm fixing to buy a small bottle set up on amazon for $250 that comes with two tips so I'm...
Jim just to clarify I was postulating that _brazing_ the two is possible -but appears difficult. Above you were mentioning TIG - you are talking about TIG welding instead of brazing eh?
I'm seeing it can be done but
EDIT: I found the 56% silver wire on McMaster just now. Couldn't find it as a rod so mentioning cutting the wire and dropping it in the chamfer led the way.
This all is saving me hours of testing, prob days. The boiling water sounds like a great clean up. I'm...
Denis, I'm looking for an acetylene set up now. I'll post on GarageJournal how to find a set up sized for this kind of thing. Larry (above) also suggested brazing and from what I'm seeing it's strong and great finish. I'll set up a firebrick paving stone "kiln" and make a jig to hold 10/20 at a...
Kenton thanks for the suggestions but those "arms" or wings are too short. The arm has to be around 2 inches overall at minimum so you can get your palm and wrist into the twist. I see the lower one is 1.75" so yes that could work but a traditional wing nut profile is not right for several end...
S
Scotti I have half of those on my shelf! I have tested the heck out what is out there. I made some aluminum camera (big cameras) accessories for years that also worked on finger clamps - it's really a bunch of flavors of expensive 'same thing' and they are super spendy. The kip levers are all...
There are a lot of youtubes with demos - I'm am just viewing them and dont have experience welding or brazing. Looks like something I need to catch up on
Just thought of rust. If I braze an alum arm on top of mild steel bolt like sketch 1 above- I can't anodize the part. Since it will be used in the weather it needs plating. Maybe make everything from 304 or another SS? It seems SS is brazable ok. If I attach alum to stainless can stainless go...
The clamp has to be bejesus tight to not slip on a bike handlebar - need much more "arm" length than wingnut to get the force w/o hurting your hand
Thanks I have only cut steel on the bandsaw geared down a couple times without good results. Last time the blade was 5-6 TPI for thick aluminum. I...
