Advice for New Large Machine Selection

I've worked at a lot of different places, not one has required corporate approval to grease bearings. Not even managerial approval. Supervisor, maybe.

Advice for New Large Machine Selection

"A problem well-defined is a problem half-solved" I read that quote on this very site and it has stuck with me. The folks with the check book only care about the money, that's what they're paid to do. Define a quantitative problem ($ lost) and present a quantitative solution ($ saved). You...

    Portaband blades and technique?

I use variable pitch Milwaukee branded blades cutting 1" mild steel with good results and good blade life. I don't use any down pressure, just let the weight of the tool do the job. Speed setting is pretty low, maybe 4-5?

    Arduino/R-Pi and household appliances

Sort of on this topic, does anyone know of brands of appliances that are as basic and repairable as the "old days". I'd love to own a range, washer, dryer, DW, fridge, etc. that didn't have a display or PCB. I'm really not into appliances with "features".

Fighting back against big company requirements

Ed is correct. Sure, you can buck it if it upsets you too much. Or, you can pay a third party to prepare everything the first time and a nominal annual fee to update it each year. Pass that expense onto your customer as a line item. No need to bury it in your overhead as not everyone you work...

WTB or trade: QC30 Bridgeport spindle or head

Leeko, Would you be at all interested in selling your comet head outright?

    Plate Beveling

I bevel 1"x3" bar for butt welding with a portaband (free-handed). No HAZ or cleanup necessary. Could you build a rig that would hold a portaband at the correct angle and roll along the edges? Might be fussier than it's worth, but those saws are cheap and wickedly useful if it doesn't work out...

OT: Nearing move to new shop, need to build or buy drawers or cabinets

Line 6-8 of these up and top them with your choice of material. Hard to beat that price and the drawers are fairly close to the dims you were looking for.

Installing compressed air lines in commercial space, any guidelines?

I've worked at three manufacturing facilities. One ran all copper, fantastic compressor room with filtered/conditioned air intake and top-notch dryers - no issues. One ran all TransAir (Parker), average compressor room/dryers - no issues. The current (and by far the largest) is all iron with...

    Best engineering screw ups

On the other end of the spectrum, my 23 yr old GM truck needed the low beam lamp replaced. Pop the hood, remove two pins, remove the entire headlamp assembly, change bulb, reverse for installation. Done in 3 minutes without any tools. Absolutely fantastic.

Combination drill/counterbore for standard cap screws; sources?

These look like something I could also utilize as we drill/counterbore a lot of holes for 3/8" SHCS's. What speeds would you run these? Faster for the clearance hole then slow down when you reach the c'bore portion or one speed for all? If I bought an off-the-shelf unit from McMaster to try...

    O/T: Truck & van rentals

Penske for me. I tried renting a 26' uhaul straight truck for moving once. They could not guarantee a truck would be available the day I needed, but they might have other (smaller) options available, depending on when/if they previous renter returned the truck on time. Called Penske; for a...

    OT: Reliable crossover vehicle

Update: Tried to buy a Honda but the local dealer just wouldn't play ball. Went to Subi and wound up with a 2020 outback with less than 15k miles, 2.5 non-turbo. She loves it, hopefully it stays that way. Thanks all for the input. On a related note, is there any worse human being in the world...
